This week's Canada Cannabis Spot Index report provides an update on the state of retail cannabis access across Canada in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. For the most part, cannabis cultivators and retailers have been deemed essential businesses and may stay open under the emergency orders issued by provincial governments. However, cannabis stores have been ordered to close in a couple smaller provinces. Online ordering remains an option, although delivery procedures have changed due to the current situation. As the pandemic develops, though, more stringent restrictions on businesses and Canadian residents may be imposed, which could result in notable pain for an industry that was already facing several challenges.

Cannabis has significant room for growth, as spending in the legal recreational market made up only 11% of the 2019 spend on all three product categories combined. Additionally, the illicit market still received 71% of all Canadian cannabis spending in 2019. The legal adult-use market has consistently taken market share from the illegal market since its opening in October 2018, but at a decreasing rate each quarter.

December 2019 sales were recently released by Statistics Canada, completing data for the 2019 calendar year. For 2019 as a whole, Canada's legal cannabis market generated C$1.19 billion in revenue. December sales totaled about C$146 million, up 8% MoM. The expansion of retail outlets continued to drive increased sales, with the number of shops across Canada rising from under 600 in November 2019 to over 650 in December 2019.

New Cannabis Seeds Should Soon Be Available in Stores in BC
A new option for sourcing legal starting materials for home cannabis growers in BC could be available soon in the form of cannabis seeds, says one cannabis nursery licence holder in BC, as well as a spokesperson for the BC LDB. Geoff White, the owner of ProgenyBio Agricultural Services Inc. in Penticton, BC says he has been working with the province of BC's Liquor Distribution Branch (LDB) to get seeds from his cannabis nursery (under the brand erbaceous) available for sale to British Columbians potentially as early as this month.

Yesterday, the Business of Cannabis team descended on Las Vegas for MJBizCon - the world’s largest cannabis business conference. As we settled in, there was another “largest” that we were keen to explore: Planet 13, dubbed as the “world’s biggest weed shop”. Since many of our Canadian friends have spent the better part of a year lamenting the state of cannabis retail in Canada - we thought we would share some top line comparisons between Planet 13 and retail cannabis in Canada. Interestingly, the place was swimming with Canadian cannabis people, doing the same comparisons we were, including at least one LP CEO.
